Medical Body Area Networks (MBANs) enable the application of wireless monitoring devices by health care facilities for the purpose transmitting patient health data over short distances at very low power levels. MBAN operations are permitted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the 2360-2400 MHz band.
In the 2360-2390 MHz band, MBAN operations are permitted for use within health care facilities only on a secondary, non-interference basis to aeronautical mobile telemetry (AMT) operations. Aerospace companies and Federal government agencies conduct flight test operations at certain locations within the United States, and as the primary user, MBAN systems cannot cause interference and must accept interference from AMT operations.
Health care facilities planning on operating MBANs are required by the FCC to register and obtain approval for their deployments from the Enterprise Wireless Alliance (EWA), the FCC’s designated frequency coordinator for MBAN. As part of this registration and approval process, EWA must generate a line of sight analysis against AMT operations for review by the Aerospace and Flight Test Radio Coordinating Council (AFTRCC), the recognized national AMT coordinator, who will then conduct a separate analysis to ensure the absence of interference to AMT operations. EWA will routinely notify health care facilitates of the status of the concurrence process with AFTRCC. Following concurrence from AFTRCC and certification from the health care facility that the system has been deployed consistent with the FCC’s rules, the MBAN deployment may be approved by EWA and officially registered.
